Choosing a scratch brush

Brass brushes are useful for general bench cleaning, including clearing debris from clogged burs. Steel brushes provide a firmer brushing action for more demanding cleaning on suitable surfaces. Fibreglass brushes offer controlled abrasive cleaning, with pen-shaped models helping reach small recesses and detailed areas.

Choose the brush to suit the metal and the finish you want to retain. Scratch brushing changes the surface and can leave a brushed texture, so test on scrap or an inconspicuous area first and use light pressure on delicate work.

Brush care and related tools

Keep brushes clean and use separate brushes for different metals or finishing tasks to reduce the transfer of debris. Check that replacement refills match your brush holder. When using fibreglass brushes, avoid touching loose fibres and collect the debris carefully.
