Lathe and Wheel Brushes
Wheel brushes for jewellery cleaning, polishing and surface finishing on bench motors, with a choice of bristle stiffness, brush materials and sizes.
Choosing a lathe brush
Choose the brush material and stiffness to suit the metal, the shape of the piece and the finish required. Soft hair and softer bristle brushes offer a more flexible brushing action, while stiffer bristles provide firmer contact. Cotton and cloth brushes provide further options for polishing with a suitable compound.
Brass and steel wire brushes are used for cleaning and creating brushed surface textures on suitable metals. Their action differs from a soft polishing brush, so test the result on scrap before working on a finished piece. Brush diameter, bristle length and the number of rows also affect access and the width of the working surface.
Fitting and keeping brushes clean
Check the centre fitting and brush size against your motor spindle or mounting arrangement, and follow the brush manufacturer's speed limit. Use light pressure and let the brush tips do the work. Keep separate brushes for different compounds and metals to reduce contamination.
Choose a suitable polishing compound for the polishing stage. For smaller areas and pendant-motor work, see miniature brushes for rotary handpieces. For manual cleaning, browse hand scratch brushes.
