Jewellery Solder for Gold, Silver and Platinum
Jewellery solder is a metal alloy used to create strong, precise joins when making or repairing jewellery. It is formulated to melt and flow at a lower temperature than the metal being joined, allowing components to be securely soldered without melting the main piece.
Regal supplies jewellers’ solder for sterling silver, yellow gold, white gold, pink gold and platinum. Depending on the alloy, our solder is available in plate, wire or paste form, with easy, medium and hard grades for different stages of fabrication and repair.
Choosing the Correct Jewellery Solder
For the best colour match and a clean finished joint, select a solder designed for the metal and carat you are working with. Gold solder should match the colour and carat of the jewellery as closely as possible, while sterling silver solder is suitable for joining sterling silver components.
The solder must also have a suitable melting or flow temperature. Jewellery solders are commonly classified into three grades:
- Hard solder has the highest melting temperature. It is normally used for the first joint or in work that will undergo further soldering.
- Medium solder has an intermediate melting temperature and is useful for subsequent joints.
- Easy solder has the lowest melting temperature and is generally used for final joints.
- Extra easy and extra-extra easy solder are available in selected alloys and forms. Their lower flow temperatures make them suitable for certain repairs and heat-sensitive work.
When completing several soldered joints on one item, jewellers usually begin with hard solder and progress through medium to easy solder. This helps prevent earlier joints from flowing again during later heating.
Plate, Wire or Paste Solder
Plate solder
Plate solder provides excellent control over the amount used. It can be cut into small pieces, known as pallions, and positioned directly on the joint. Regal supplies plate solder in a range of silver, gold and platinum alloys and grades.
Wire solder
Wire solder is convenient to cut into consistent lengths. Selected sterling silver and gold solders are available in wire form.
Solder paste
Jewellery solder paste combines finely powdered solder with flux in a syringe, allowing accurate and repeatable application. It is available for sterling silver and a wide range of gold colours and carats. Browse our Hilderbrand jewellery solder pastes.
Regal’s tools division also stocks low-temperature soft solder pastes for suitable applications. These products are separate from the precious-metal solders used for traditional jewellery fabrication.
